Avoiding going to bed

Chris is at a teachers' convention on the mainland, and so I'm home alone until Friday. It's funny how much weirder it is to be the spouse alone at home; I've been away from Chris for weeks at a time, but I'm rarely the one left here alone. I tend to stay up a little too late when I'm on my own here, and watch too much TV so that I don't listen for weird noises in the house. (You might be able to tell that I'm doing that right now. Watching the TV shows that I taped while I was away at prayer meeting.)

In other news, I'm planning on being really brave on Friday. I'm going to get myself to Vancouver all by myself, ride the SkyTrain alone, and then after Chris and I meet up, we're going to be dressed in Rider gear in the eighth row (30 yard line) at BC Place. I've never been at a game cheering for the away team before. It's one thing to yell loudly when everyone else is yelling with you; it's a completely other thing when there's a distinct possibility that you're going to be surrounded by Lions fans. (Of course, Chris will always be louder than me.)

Well, I guess if I'm going to brave Berlin all by myself (and Ky just went to London alone), I'm going to have to be alone in Vancouver for a few hours.

If it makes you feel any better, heading to downtown Chicago on my own was an experience, too, particularly as evening approached: the type of people walking the streets started to change (i.e. I felt less safe) and I got increasingly nervous.

(And then, of course, a couple days later I was bamboozled into paying someone $10US for a shoeshine on my hikers.)

Advice for going to Berlin. Take Mark with you. No, just kidding. Just don't make eye contact with anyone. For reals. The first day, I would smile at people with babies and puppies, smile at people walking by and they ALL gave me stabby "What are you looking at?" looks. EVEN THE BABIES. So Mark told me to stop looking at people and I would be fine. And I was. True story.

Also, don't ride the train alone at night. I was scared out of my mind of the drunken, yelling people who I couldn't understand.

LynnieC: The drunken yelly people scared us enough when we took the train at night and weren't alone! (Also the thieves.)

Marc: I am so glad that I'm not going to be alone when evening hits. I've been in Vancouver enough that I'm only intimidated by the transit part in the daytime, but I'm so glad that Chris will be with me by the afternoon.
