Help a clueless procrastination queen

It all began when we got the ugly futon back and had to return the soft and lovely black leather couch. This time, however, we discovered that the hideous cover was over another cover that is just beige. I can handle beige, after the Festival of Ugliness that was the other cover. (Seriously: click on that link and take a really long look at that pattern.)

But then I wanted everything in the living room to look like it belonged together, and we took to redecorating. At this point, our living room looks like this:

Now. I have a few questions for you. Does it look a little sparse to you? What's lacking there? What can we do to make it feel a little homier in there?

Also: we're planning on re-painting this table (and possibly the end table underneath the TV):

What colour should we paint it? I'd originally been planning on painting it black, but then we moved that dark wood stereo on top of it, and now I'm worried that black would look strange there. But what colour should we paint it?

Personally, I love that green. It adds a homey feel. I think you should put some bright pillows on your couch (maybe the same green?) or maybe a blanket. Ooh! and maybe a hardy plant in the corner? One that doesn't need a lot of light. And a picture over the couch- or a mirror from IKEA- that's what we have.

Wow, I just had a burst of creativity. Imagine that.

Oh. Nevermind. You already have a picture over the couch. Haha.

Jen again.

Jen, I also didn't mention that the paint had chipped off in a horrednous way. And I really don't love the green. Also, Chris is removing that paint as we speak.

I still think you should paint it black, but find a nice, short cloth in a tan colour that matches the wall and beige in the couch to break up the cherry-on-black. A cloth would prevent scuffing, and the black table legs showing underneath would tie in with the black picture frames above.

Of course, that might just be my affinity for black speaking.

Sorry we missed your call today. I'm sick and we were napping.

Taupe, baby.

Do you like red? You could paint those two tables red, and then paint one of the walls a gold color (like your pillows)...both gold and red look great with beige. I think the beige futon looks good, btw. And I also agree with Jen...some green plants would spice things up.

Oh, and I forgot to add: get red pillows to sit with the gold ones. That is, if you like this idea.

If you sew (I think you do, right?), I would sew a new cover for the futon. The problem is that the beige of the futon blends into the walls. Sewing a cover for the futon wouldn't be hard at all. It would more or less be a big pillow case, or a huge rectangle hemmed and pieced together in two parts that wrapped/folded over the futon and tied/buttoned on the back. Even if you don't sew, you can get some no-sew hemming tape from a craft store. You might even be able to pick up a cheap duvet cover somewhere to cover the futon mattress. I agree that red accents would look smashing. What about a red cover for the futon, red for the table, and some sage and beige throw pillows for the couch?

If you don't sew a new cover, you should get some wonderful pillows for your couch. And I like what Meg says about the table. Except I maybe would put a wonderful-pillows-coloured cloth over the table instead of a beige one. Colours make a room happier.

I'm thinking purple, orange, and silver stripes or streaks.

OR

You could do the room in a BSG or Star Trek theme with painted on rivets and whatnot.

I'm with Big C. Take a chance with the crazy. Go for a BSG theme.

I'd do an area rug. We have a nice red one on top of the apartment carpet....it helps make things more cozy.
