Costumes of Halloweens Past

A tabulation of the Halloween costumes I have worn (or at least the costumes I remember):
  • Transformer mask with a parka. I was two years old. I think Janny was Donald Duck. I'm not sure where we'd gotten the masks.
  • Raggedy Ann, when I was in preschool. Mom made a wig out of yarn, and then I wore a gingham dress and mom painted my face.
  • A pink bunny, in kindergarten. I wore a pink footie sleeper with a cotton ball glued on as a tail, and then a pink zip-up bunnyhug over that. We stapled the cardboard ears to the bunnyhug's hood.
  • A Queen. Mom sewed fun fur to a purple cloth cape, and I spray-painted a cardboard crown gold. I think I wore an old dress of my mom's.
  • The Queen of Hearts (specifically the one from Alice in Wonderland.) I think I repurposed an old shirt of my dad's for that cape, making a red turned-up collar out of the stiff shirt collar.
  • Charlie Chaplin. Mostly, it was my Dad's suit, a plastic bowler hat, and the moustachioed plastic nose from my brother's previous Super Mario costume. (My brother and my mom came up with cool costumes for him. When Michael was in playschool, mom turned him into a tube of toothpaste.)
  • Anne Shirley, of Green Gables fame. (I think I was about 11 or 12 at the time). We bought a red wig and I braided it, and I wore a gingham babydoll dress and Victorian-style granny boots, and made freckles with an old eyeliner pencil. (It was the era of babydoll dresses and granny boots.)
  • I probably used the family cat costume at some point.
  • Beatnick, along with Ky and Lyn, when I was a teenager. We wore black turtlenecks, berets and sunglasses, and we carried bongos. I think Ky had a goatee and moustache painted on, and we improvised beat poetry for candy.
  • ABBA's Dancing Queen, the year after that. I wore one of my mother's dresses from the 70s. (I think I layered a lot of clothes under the dress, because I still trick-or-treated. This was the last year I did.) (That was the year Ky went as a KGB agent, who she named Andrassi Galanov, with her father's winter coat and fur hat.)
  • Jan Brady. Seriously, I was a dead ringer for Jan Brady. And it was easy: I wore some polyester clothes from my mother's youth, some platform shoes, and then curled the front part of my hair. Actually, back when I wore 70s clothes and had long hair, I looked like Jan Brady anyway.
  • Peter Tork of the Monkees. My brother was Mickey Dolenz, Ky was Davy Jones, Lyn was Mike Nesmith, and Bronwyn was Frank Zappa.
  • (There's one more year where I clearly dressed up, and I can't remember what I wore, but I think a few of us friends just went to the movies. I'm pretty sure the costume involved some kinds of 70s clothes that I just dug out of my and my parent's closets.)
  • Audrey Hepburn. I spray-dyed my hair black, wore a black dress and opera gloves, and carried one of those long cigarette holders. With the black hair, it was freaky how much I looked like my sister. In fact, I ran into an old friend of my sister's and she thought I was Janny. (At the first event where I wore this costume I met Chris for the first time.)
  • Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan. (I'm going to dress like her again this year.) Black turtleneck, olive green pants, army jacket that I've painted "M*A*S*H 4077" on the back, dog tags, red lipstick, feathered hair. I've been tempted to switch it up with my M*A*S*H t-shirt, but I think that would be sacrificing accuracy for the sake of people getting the joke more quickly. Maybe I'll wear the turtleneck when I wear it to school on Halloween, and wear the t-shirt when I go to the department Halloween party. Thoughts?

You have had the best Halloween costumes EVER! For the Hot Lips costume this year, I'd go with authenticity for the department party and the T-shirt under the jacket for school.

My costumes that I can remember? Little Miss Muffet (Mum made a spider for me to carry out of a pair of Dad's black socks), princess, princess, princess, one of the Yup Yup aliens from Sesame Street, and Godzilla (which took me a day to make out of black garbage bags - you might remember it from the IVCF party).

Don't sacrifice the accuracy!

Seriously, gramsey? You think I've had the best Halloween costumes ever? Chris and I actually were just talking about when you were the Yup-Yup alien and Godzilla, and we established that you've had the best costumes ever.

(We also figured that your whole family is amazing with the costumes: your brothers as Bill and Ted? Brilliant.)

big c: Good choice. You'd make an excellent 6'7" Frankenstein's monster. (You mean the monster and not Dr. Frankenstein, right?)
