Mystery: Halloween Firecrackers?

Are we Saskatchewanians the only ones who aren't used to the immense number of firecrackers that have been going off, in advance of Hallowe'en? Like, it's constant here, and we've never encountered this before. Chris theorises that it's either a Wiccan thing, or it's normal everywhere but in Saskatchewan. Or it's both.

Now I think I hear some going off on our street.

I think, tomorrow night, I want to go outside for a while in the early evening, to see what kids' costumes look like, when they don't have to be designed to go over snowsuits.

Best part of this week? To quote Chris, "And you know what happens on Tuesday: candy's dirt cheap."

That is sooo funny that you're talking about this in your blog because I just said the very same thing to Eric this morning. 'It must be a BC thing to set off firecrackers because that NEVER happened in Saskatchewan' I actually thought someone was firing off a gun so I was checking the time I heard the shot so that I could tell the police if they came questioning about a murder. Crazy BCers

And me? I was thinking "YES! Cheap candy!!"

Psst...Mary. This is the candy you bought last halloween. I'm the suckers you never ate, because they tasted like soap.

Thanks for leaving me with Meg.

Well, I've lived in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Minnesota, I don't recall any firecrackers going off in any of those places. Conclusion: it must be a B.C. thing. I'll have to ask Chris (Wylie) in northern B.C., and see whether a similar phenomenon is going on there.

Hey, Candy that Meg and I Bought Jointly. I thought it was the leftover Tootsie Rolls that ended up tasting like soap. If you're the suckers, didn't I leave you behind because you only had yellows left? You know that I don't eat yellow suckers.

I was directed to this blog by a friend of mine. So BCers are the only ones who light firecrackers on Halloween, eh? Interesting. Personally, I wouldn't know, as I have never partaken...partook...I
really don't have that right, do I...in the lighting of firecrackers. It's interesting to read about BC people from a POV of someone who is not from BC.

I'm suprised no one has yet posted the origin/explanation as to why only here in BC (actually, I've heard they do it in Nova Scotia, too). The reason? This is BRITISH Columbia and the Brits not only brought tea and crumpets, but they celebrate Guy Fawkes day around the same time (nov. 5) by lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks. This is to commerate the foiling of a plot to blow up Parliament a very long time ago (15th or 16th century). Not surprising it happens in Nova Scotia too, since that province is named for Scotland. I'm from Alberta originally and had the same reaction as the Flatlanders on my first halloween in Van.
