Further Chronicles of Procrastination

Okay, so I was reading journal articles like a good little girl, but I got up to make a pot of tea, and when I sat down suddenly I was reading blogs! I read Kristiface's blog and was checking out her blogroll when I noticed the blog "Eating an Elephant" by Histgrad. Okay, she's hilarious and awfully reminiscent of last year's attempts at writing the thesis. And she took part in what's becoming a meme on (non-harmful) guilty pleasures and their opposites (things you know you should like but don't), as started at Confessions of a Community College Dean.

And so, here are mine (because right now I'd rather be doing this than read about the West as an idea):

Things I don't like (even though I feel like I should): most soups, tomatoes (in non-ketchup form), both Brie and Camembert (taste like feet to me), gravelly-voiced male singers usually (okay, so I allow for Johnny Cash and sometimes Bob Dylan, but I'm coming to the point where I prefer Dylan as a song writer than a singer himself), local sports teams (I just don't care and I often have a real aversion to local sports), history involving explorers, corn, pointy-toed shoes, sushi (even the non-fish kind that I'm not allergic to -- I just don't like the taste of it and I've tried so hard to like it), most of the TV shows popular at this moment (it helps when you go without TV for a long time), and any of the sci fi that Chris tries to get me to like.

Things I like (even though I feel like I shouldn't): Kraft Dinner, marshmallow fluff right out of the jar, peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, Pixie Stix (especially in the giant packages), adding lots and lots of sugar to my pretentious teas, bourgeois herbal teas from boxes, Tim Horton's (I love that place so much it hurts), McDonald's Chicken McNuggets and fries (even after my brother got food poisoning from the McNuggets), campy 60s TV shows (Batman, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Thunderbirds...), musicals (by which I mean Rogers & Hammerstein and Hello, Dolly! and stuff like that), oh and especially the cheesy 90s musical Newsies, so many other cheesy movies, entertainment news, girly music (like Dido, early Jewel, Amanda Marshall and Norah Jones), oh and also angry girl music (see: early Alanis Morrissette and Avril Lavigne. I said it. Does it make things worse that Chris loves this stuff too?), and pop-y 60s bands like the Beatles and Monkees. (Okay, and I often like pretty folk music, and more of the soft folk-rock or folky pop, like Carole King, more than more classicly folk music, although I also love it, except when I get overloaded with the gravelly voices.)

How about you? (And Ky and Meg: can you think of any others? You guys tend to know these things.)

It feels good to get all that off my chest. I am not nearly as cool or pretentious as I like to pretend to be, out there in academia. Keep in mind that I was the one who shouted "That's awesome!" in response to a student saying she'd like to be a female "Gambit."

Added the next morning: I came up with a bunch more "guilty pleasures," all of which have to do with foods that I shouldn't like because I'm allergic and don't get shots for them, but that I can't do without: milk and all milk products, especially cheese and chocolate, tea, coffee, and ginger ale (okay, so I hate ginger and I'm pretty badly allergic, but is there any real ginger in ginger ale? Because I love it.).

Yeah, but who can possibly resist the cheesy goodness (?!) that is Kraft Dinner? In other news, I saw a wickedly cool Wonder Woman notebook while I was on a "learning my new city" stroll, and thought of you. I hope you're taking good care of my city for me.
