Music Meme

Janice started me on this, Amanda continued it, and it's probably going to take me a while to complete it:

1) A favorite political track. It's a hard call. I'll have to call it as a tie between "War Child" by the Cranberries and "Another Age" by Phil Ochs, with special mention to "Red and Black" from les Misérables.
2) One of those tracks that make you dance on the dancefloor no matter what. I'm going to have to copy Janice: "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston.
3) The song you’d use to tell someone you love them. "And I Love You So" by Don Maclean, followed closely by "Anyone At All" by Carole King.
4) A song that has made you sit down and analyze its lyrics. "All Along the Watchtower," Bob Dylan, or "Coax Me," by Sloan.
5) A song that you like, that a two year old would like as well. I copy Janice again: "Theme from Spiderman." I've had it memorised for years, and we taught it to my little cousin.
6) A song that gives you an energy boost. "Crazy On You," Heart.
7) A song that you and your grandparents (would probably) like. "Man of Constant Sorrows," Soggy Bottom Boys, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? I was raised on bluegrass.
8) A song that you really liked when you were 14-16, and still really like now. "Stepping Stone" by the Monkees.
9) A sad song that would be in the soundtrack of the movie about your life. "I Do" by Jude. Update: I changed my mind, and depending on the scene it would either be "White Flag" by Dido (I know exactly which scene) or "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor (a very different scene). However, come to think of it, "I'll Be Okay" by Amanda Marshall would be good for a montage of my "Year of Quietness" where I was just working at an office supply store, taking classes, and finally growing up.
10) A peppy song that would start the opening credits of the movie about your life. "Deeper Than Beauty," by Sloan, or "These Boots Were Made For Walking," Nancy Sinatra. Update: Ky suggested "Along Comes Mary" by the Association, and that would be awesome.
11) A good song from a genre of music that no one would guess that you liked. "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns 'N Roses.
12) A song that you think should have been playing when you were born. Sigh. We all know the answer to this one: "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harem. Update: Here, "Along Comes Mary" would also be appropriate.
13) A favorite artist duo collaboration. "Song For a Winter's Night," Sarah McLaughlan and Jewel.
14) A favorite song that you completely disagree with (politically, morally, commonsenically, religiously etc.) "I Love Myself Today," Bif Naked.
15) The song that you like despite the fact your IQ level drops several points every time you listen to it. "Incense and Peppermints," Strawberry Alarm Clock. (Incense, peppermints, the colour of time...?!!?)
16) Your smooth song, for relaxing. "J'suis Cool," by Padam, or anything by Norah Jones, or Jewel's earlier stuff. And Dido. Okay, most of the music around here is "smooth" and "for relaxing."
17) A song you would send to someone you hate or are mad at. "You're So Vain," Carly Simon Update: Karl reminded me that I based an entire mix CD for him around this song. Ha!
18) A favorite track from an outfit considered a “super-group.” "Mysterious Ways," U2. You should see the shimmy dance I do to it, although it got me hit on by a pothead at midnight at 7-11 in Saskatoon. His big line: "Junior Mints -- good choice."
19) A song that makes you reminisce about good times with a family member. "Uncle John's Band," the Grateful Dead.
20) Your favorite song at this moment in time. "Don't Leave Me This Way," Thelma Houston.

I just know that I'm going to change my mind about these choices endlessly. But this is how I would answer it at this moment. How about you?

There wasn't a single entry about the Beatles here. Weird.

Okay so the songs that you would use to tell someone you love them were on the CD you gave me but neither of them were actually the song you sang to me on Valentine's day when we were first dating. Also you were juandis when you were born not, pale. Just some thoughts. ;-)

I just realized that I placed the comma in a very wrong spot on the last sentence of my previous comment. Which reminds me, Mary can I borrow "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" please?

Maryanne, the big question I have to ask is: Why would a song about a guy telling his ex-girlfriend that he can't go to her wedding because he's still in love with her be in the soundtrack of your life????? What are you trying to say?

Queen of West Procrastination said...

I had originally said "I Know," but I like "I Do" better. No hidden meanings.

Well that's good to hear. I didn't want to imagine you still in love with an ex. And it really really is a fantastic song, isn't it???

Hey Chris, when I read your comment I thought juandis was a spanish word. And I was like...I didn't know Mary was Spanish. Ole.

Hey aren't you working on a thesis? Me@Home

Oh, and also replying to Christopher: you are confusing "songs to tell someone that you love them" with "songs to tell someone that you realised that you've been really reserved because you're scared of being hurt, but you want to give this relationship a shot and start taking emotional risks," which would then be "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel. Which is exactly what the song says.

And Ky, I'm sorry that I scared you into thinking I was in love with an ex. Goodness no. I was just like, "What would be a good sad song for a movie?"

Hahahaha. I think one of my parents just commented.

Also: juandis=awesome.

And my brother sometimes calls me "Yellow Baby," to commemorate the jaundis.

So apparently I misspelt jaundis. Oh well. I think that your Mom should have put your in a flower pot when she sat you on the window sill to get the sunlight that you needed. It would have been funny to me.
