Confessions of a tea junkie

Nothing makes you stop and re-evaluate your life's priorities like realising that you were just proud of yourself for clearing out your tea cupboard and managing to pare down your collection to twenty-two varieties of loose tea.

Is this something that other collectors go through? Do they have moments of self-awareness where they think the other-things-people-collect version of: "Normal people don't consider twenty-two to be a small number, and they certainly don't own eight teapots"? And then there's the "there's no good way in which I can confess to having an entire cupboard devoted to tea" thought.

Eh, at least it's not an expensive habit, and it's nice having nice hot drinks available when people come to visit.

(To assuage my conscience, I ended up long-term-loaning out one of my eight teapots last night.)

Would it make you feel better to know that not only to we have way more tea than that (the girl spent 1/3 of her vacation money on tea!) but the when it comes to teapots....I have more teapots than you have types of loose tea. Most of which happened unitentionally, by the by.

Oh, I'm trying hard not to be jealous. More than twenty-two teapots? Chris won't let me get any more until we live in a bigger place.

I kind of miss the old days when my roommate Meg and I had 75 different kinds of tea. (Of course, if I count the tea bags I keep in a wooden chest on the fridge, the number goes up to 39, but that's still way down from what I used to have.) But for now I'm trying to focus my buying on a smaller number of teas which I drink regularly, so that they don't have a chance to go stale. I was amused when I realised that even with the "smaller" number I could still drink a different variety of tea every day for three weeks.

Blog Fodder: I'll have to try Riston Earl Grey when I get out there. My current favourite Earl Grey is from Murchie's (it also helps that I can go downtown and buy half a pound of it for $11).
