Does anyone else find it to be creepy when a single-authored work constantly refers to the author as "we"? As in "the methods that 'we' are going to use in this book"? I just noticed this line: "For that reason we have tried to set the institutions of law and order in the context of..." He never says "I," and I find no evidence of a second author at all.
Multiple personalities? The research assistant did most of the work but gets none of the credit? The historian thought it's too informal to say "I"?

combination of informality and trying to involve the reader I think. I spent the last two years beating this habit out of PH.
