It's really annoying to read books that I like, when I'm reading them for the comps. I want to linger. I want to time to absorb and reflect. But I have to charge on through, consuming quickly and taking just the essentials.
I really have to recommend the two books that I'm reading today: Jay Winter's Remembering War: The Great War Between Memory and History in the Twentieth Century (2006) and Margaret Macmillan's Paris 1919 (2003). I'd love to spend a whole week on each.
