Why it's a good idea: it totally blocks out the sound of one's Wonderful Husband getting really worked up about a football game. (Except when internet radio starts buffering just before Roughrider touchdowns, at which point he howls and weeps and runs around the room threatening the computer.)
Why it's a bad (albeit awesome) idea: all the music is just that much better with puffy headphones (even puffy headphones you bought for $3 on a WestJet plane -- they're a significant upgrade from the garbage $1 headphones). So far, it's played the Amanda Marshall, Cranberries, Carol King, Dido, and now "I Had a Dream" from Les Miserables. I keep having to resisting singing along in an operatic voice. I have not resisted a.) mouthing the words passionately, or b.) fist-pumping to the music. And I have, so far, resisted actually writing this essay. The music's too good.

In other news, I seem determined to convince the entire new cohort of grad students that I'm the Biggest Dork on Earth. So far, I've confessed to: a.) my undying love for the movie Newsies, b.) the fact that I was in Girl Guides until I was nearly 18 years old (this one got a particularly surprised reaction, even from people who've known me for a while), c.) my freaky amount of knowlege about M*A*S*H, and d.) my love for the TV show Battlestar Galactica. Every single time, it's in front of a group of new grad students, many of whom respond as if I'm absolutely insane.

I've held a special place in my heart for Newsies since my middle-school days, when I kept a picture of Christian Bale in my school notebook.
Also, I completely love BSG.
But, I only made it through a year of Girl Scouts (tights = bad), and I have no knowledge of MASH. So, am I half dork?
As far as the dorkiness goes, you should have seen one of my classes when I confessed my undying attraction to Gerard Depardieu (this was for a course in which we watched The Return of Martin Guerre). They ribbed me about it all semester.
Ha! Love of Gerard Depardieu. That's awesome.
You know, it's funny how many closet Newsies fans I find out there.
I have been feeling dorky because for some reason my knowledge of sci-fi keeps coming up and the people around me look at me with disgust. It's not my fault though, the lecturer assigned students to write a sci-fi piece in a class that has nothing to do with sci-fi, so I have to do something to help them. The new BSG IS really great, but it sounds insane to people who have only seen the old show.
Breena: I know! And have you tried to explain cylons to people who haven't watched the show? "Well, they're these robots who killed most of humanity, but they look just like humans!"
