De-Cluttering

Every once in a while, Chris and I decide to reorganise and de-clutter our home. We always have some incentive to do this: once, it was because we had to clear out the storage room for the winter (because our furnace gets really hot and there needed to be more space around it). There have been a few times where we've done this while I was amid a cleaning frenzy. This time, our incentive was the block garage sale that's happening while I'm in Regina. We wanted to go through our belongings together and figure out what can go. (Anything that's not sold is being driven straight to the Sally Ann.)

I have two observations, as a result of this process:

1.) Can you believe that we found a few more boxes that needed unpacking? This time, I found my winter boots and my skates! These would have been highly useful six months ago. You know, back when I went to Saskatchewan for Christmas. I'm not sure how this box ended up among my file boxes and coursework notebooks.

2.) It's really exhilerating to get rid of unnecessary belongings. Chris and I went through this process together, helping each other let go of things that had become burdens. I cut my stuffed animal collection in half. (It helped that they lived in plastic bags, in the bag of a closet, for nearly a year.) It's always difficult at first, as I feel sentimental about every tiny scrap, and then it's freeing and exciting, especially as I realise how much space I've freed up, and see how much I'm letting go. Somehow, de-cluttering my belongings helps me to de-clutter my mind.

I completely agree with you Maryanne. I got rid of quite a bit before I moved and it did feel great. I want to get rid of at least as much as I unpack but the things I have now are harder to get rid of and I don't know if I can do it alone.

Yay for decluttering! I love doing it, but I'm really quite bad at it, unless I have an impending move, and then I'm all about not having to carry stuff. :)
