Chris's Compy: Slightly Shotgunned

Chris's computer is dead. I will take this moment to mention that I've been complaining for a while that it smelled like something was shorting out (at first I thought it was the terrible old monitor), but Chris reassured me that "it always smelled like that" and that there was nothing wrong with his computer. It was fine.

And then yesterday it shut off suddenly, and wouldn't re-start. The power supply went (it pretty much melted). And so Chris took his computer apart tonight (he also found a spider nest in the power supply -- gross!), and we started to add up the cost of fixing his computer. Nearly $80 to replace the power supply. It also lacks a video card and he needs a new sound card. (Not to mention the speakers that rattle, and so he has a rubber band around the rattly one, with a napkin attached to it, to absorb the rattling.)

And so I went to the Dell site, especially because today we found out that he gets a 10% discount off of Dell PCs. It turns out, because we don't need a monitor, and we are just looking at something really basic (he's thinking he'll add the good parts from his old computer into the new one), we could get a CPU for $350, and that would be with a free keyboard, mouse and speakers.

He still wants to do a bit further research (although a bunch of their sales end tomorrow and Friday), and it's a bitter pill for him to go Dell, but it looks like this is the way we'll go.
